Can I get Life & Critical Illness Cover if I have a Pre-existing Medical Condition?

Thousands of people in the UK are living with a medical condition, but does that mean that none of them can get Life Insurance or Critical Illness Insurance?

Not necessarily. Insurance companies are realists at the end of the day and know that for many people, living with a medical condition is just a part of normal life.

This is why working with an adviser is useful when looking at which Life & Critical Illness Cover is right for you. By the time it come to discussing your protection needs, you will have built up a relationship with your adviser. In all likelihood, you will feel comfortable enough to be open and honest about any medical conditions that you have.

The information that your adviser needs to apply for Life & Critical Illness Cover on your behalf, will vary from case to case but as an overview these are the sort of details that your adviser will need:

  • The name of the condition that you have (or are being investigated for)

  • The date you were diagnosed

  • Details of any hospital admissions and any specialist referrals

  • The severity and regularity of your symptoms

  • Information on how this condition affects your day to day, including any absences from work

  • Any medication that you’re on as well as the date you started them

  • The more detail that you can give your adviser the better as they will approach various insurance providers to see if they would potentially insure you.

The insurance providers may request a report form your GP to help them better understand your condition, they are only able to do this with your consent and you may request to see the report before the GP sends it to the insurance provider.

Many of the insurance providers starting point is a Health & Lifestyle questionnaire. This helps them better understand your lifestyle & health circumstances, which in turn allows them to make an informed decision regarding your cover. They may not need to obtain any further information but it is imperative any information given to the insurer is full, true and correct, to the best of your knowledge and belief.

Ultimately the decision whether or not to offer you insurance is down to the insurance providers, but our team will do everything in their power to ensure that you have cover that is appropriate for you.

In some cases, this might mean that only Life Insurance is available or, in others, there may be an additional premium to pay or certain conditions are not covered by the insurance.

Whatever the outcome of this process, you can be certain that your adviser and the team have done everything in their power to ensure that you have suitable cover in place.
